Muirburn, burning the heather

Another great photographic assignment in recent weeks here in Scotland, was a visit to an estate up north to discuss grouse shooting and management of the land. Alas there was no grouse shooting to be photographed, but the gamekeeper and his team were undertaking some management of the heather, and burning patches of it to aid regeneration.

As we arrived up on the hill and I could see the white smoke blowing across the land it didn’t take me long to request we go visit the workers, and do some photography with them.

It was quite fascinating to see a worker control the fire, and the direction of it, by using a leaf blower.

And of course I came home smelling like a smokey Islay single malt.
