Edge of an Empire

A journey through time, along Scotland’s Roman-era Antonine Wall.

Stretching from Old Kilpatrick in the west, crossing Scotland’s central belt to Bo’ness in the east, the ditch and turf rampart which once formed the ‘wall’ was the most north westerly edge of the Roman Empire. The wall was built in AD142 on the orders of Emperor Antonine Pious, and was manned for approximately 20-years, until it was abandoned for reasons unknown.
