Inspirational

What a privilege it is to be a photographer, to be able to travel the world, or your own country (Scotland) or even city (Glasgow) and to meet and photograph the people who contribute to the cultural fabric of our nation and times. To be able to go inside places, offices, studios which aren't generally open to the public. To spend time talking and hearing of how ideas are generated and and formed, to swop stories, to share experiences. It's all incredibly inspirational, and a privilege.

Douglas Gordon, (born Glasgow, 1966), artist working with film and sculpture, photographed in his studio in Berlin, Germany, on 20 November 2023. Douglas Gordon is a Scottish artist. He won the Turner Prize in 1996, the Premio 2000 at the 47th Venice Biennale in 1997 and the Hugo Boss Prize in 1998. He lives and works in Berlin, Germany. ©Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert 2023, all rights reserved.

Last year was such a time, as I criss-crossed Scotland, and a quick jaunt over to Berlin, photographing with the Artists of Scotland. Over the course of a year, Nov 2022 until now, I've photographed 120 of the pre-eminent artists of our times. 120 portraits, 120 glimpses into studios, 120 great conversations, many new friends, many new contacts, many new ideas.

It's been great to meet all the inspirational artists, but a few in particular right towards the end of last year were high points in the project. Out to Berlin to photograph with Turner Prize winner Douglas Gordon, and here in the Southside of Glasgow with the prolific and hard working Jim Lambie, were but two of the many inspiring meetings, coming away enthused about their work, about making work, about being more creative. As the old maxim goes, surround yourself with those who lift you up and inspire.

To see inside the studios and thus a glimpse into their mindsets, to see works half done, ideas still being worked through. To see how the works are made and who is helping, how the studios are set up. Some are set up for creativity, some are set up for business, some are big, some are small, some neat, some tidy.

Here's three of the portraits from the series Artists of Scotland, which now encompasses 120 portraits, and will continue to grow slightly. The inspirational project is available for exhibition, and publication, just get in touch!
