The images in the first half of this book come from an auction sale in Beith, of Jim Davidson’s pigeons, on 6th January 6th 1991.
The images in the latter half are from an auction in Kilwinning, a week later in mid-January 1991.
I photographed these images when I was was just starting out in my career, and while happy with them I didn’t at that time have an outlet for them. The images lay quietly in my archive all these years, and only through a recent project to revisit my archive have they been given new life. This is the first time these photographs have been shown and published. - Jeremy

“There’s a certain radiance that only the best photographers can hope to capture, and that radiance — that interior light, that fineness, that visual eloquence — is unmistakably present in Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert’s series from the Ayrshire Pigeon Auctions of 1991.
I know that part of the world, I know those people and their traditions, and somehow the timeless, decent habits of their lives are captured in these wonderful pictures. I can imagine the soft, Robert Burns-like lilt of their speech and the special expectations they have of their birds. It’s here in the everyday poetry of Sutton-Hibbert’s images.
The first time I saw this work I bought a print, and I’ve treasured it now for years. It exemplifies, as all these images do, the tender alchemy achieved by the best practitioners of the photographer’s art, turning the most ordinary reality into a permanent distillation of the human spirit.”
