34 Black and white photographs

Photographs of festivities and amusements by people celebrating the Glasgow Fair holiday in 1991. Photographs were taken on Glasgow Green, and down on Ayr beach.

“All the fun of the Fair.

Little did Bishop Jocelin realise in 1190 when he persuaded King William the Lion to allow the city to hold an annual July market/fair that, 835 years later, we’d still be marking the event, as the Glasgow Fair Holiday.

These images, taken at ‘the shows’ on Glasgow Green, and down in Ayr, capture some of that enduring joy; two weeks of magic and misrule, when workaday worries give way to fun, and having a ‘rerr terr’.

Although 1991 feels like just a blink of the eye ago, in reality it was 34 year ago, and many of the youngsters pictured here will now have their own children, grandchildren, while most of the oldies will have joined the ranks of ‘dear happy ghosts’.

Swings and roundabouts, time and tide, sun and rain, beery breath, and whisky kisses.

The dogs bark, the caravan moves on – until next year…” - Norry Wilson, of Lost Glasgow.

Also available as part of the Glasgow Set of 3 zines, at a discounted rate.

Many of the images have never before been printed nor published.
